This is one of a number of scenes painted of, and around Henley Regatta.
My passion for these scenes was ignited by my then agent, who was selling my work in America - a one time keen and noted rower, suggesting that I engage with his two sons (also keen and competitive rowers) who commissioned me to paint a scene of their local rowing club -The Ariel Rowing Club on the River Avon nr. Bristol. This painting was used for a signed limited edition print, which was well received. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and painted a series of scenes of this location.
I was invited to join a party in the Stewards' Enclosure at Henley, so that I could gather information for a series of paintings around the rowing scene. I was immediately taken by the atmosphere of this archetypical British summer scene, the ladies in their lovely dresses and hats, the rowers and boats on the river on a beautiful day, Having a love of figurative painting, the whole ambiance appealed to me and I was keen to capture this on canvas, this proved to be very successful.`
